One of the dogs seized in a raid on an alleged dog fighting ring sits in a crate at the Humane Society of Highlands County on Thursday. The Humane Society took in some of the dogs this week to be vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered.

For two fighting dogs, a happy ending just wasn't possible. Perhaps because of their breeding, perhaps because of their training, they were probably too dangerous.

SEBRING: 100 YEARS OF HISTORY

Schumacher was an early Highlands County sheriff

Doyle Schumacher was the youngest sheriff in Florida when he took office in 1933. He held the office on two separate occasions and his last term ended in 1948. Known for his love of hunting, Schumacher trained his own dogs.

Life was hard for Pearl Schumacher and her three sons, Floyd, Doyle and John W., when they moved from West Virginia to Sebring in 1917, after her husband was killed in an accident. Floyd had health issues, so his doctor had recommended the family move to Florida, said Jean Hancock, the wife of Doyle's stepson, Jonathan "Jack" Hancock.

Child molester gets delay

On Dec. 12, Orestes Gonzalez pled guilty before Circuit Court Judge Angela Cowden to five counts of lewd molestation and lewd conduct.
